Overall, after obtaining those points, students may score another 30 points (if their application is lodged before they turn 30). With another 5 bonus points for holding an Australian qualification, the 120 points currently required for successful migration are within easy reach for every student.

T & I and Migration

According to Australia’s immigration laws and regulations, applicants wishing to apply for a student visa must be ‘genuine students”. That is, their purpose is to come to Australia to undertake full-time study and abide by the regulations regarding student visas.

In order to meet the special demand for skilled professionals in certain fields as well as the overall shortage of labour, the Australian government has exempted the work experience requirements of those eligible students who have completed over two years’ of higher education in Australia and have been awarded relevant qualifications. If they meet relevant requirements of DIAC, they may apply for permanent residency (PR, often referred to as “green card”) without meeting the work experience requirement.

According to the new migration regulation effective as of September 1, 2007 Translator/Interpreter is a 60-point occupation. Once successfully completing the course of Advanced Diploma of Translating or Advanced Diploma of Interpreting with AITI, students may immediately apply for NAATI Professional Translator / Interpreter accreditation (Level 3) without sitting NAATI examinations. This means they have also passed the Translator/Interpreter’s occupation assessment and have obtained 60 points with occupation.

Once obtaining the 60 points for occupation, students also receive an extra 5 bonus points for being proficient in a community language. Therefore, the occupation of Translator/Interpreter is often considered a 65-point occupation, and it is an occupation that earns the applicant the highest points without having to undertake work experience.

Another advantage is studying translation/Interpreting enables rapid progress in English language proficiency, which makes it easier to get a high score with the IELTS test. This helps to earn the 25 points for English proficiency.

When graduating, students having undertaken the two-year translation/Interpreting course on the Geelong Campus will get the five bonus points for regional areas.

Overall, after obtaining those points, students may score another 30 points (if their application is lodged before they turn 30). With another 5 bonus points for holding an Australian qualification, the 120 points currently required for successful migration are within easy reach for every student.
